What Shall I Do to Inherit Eternal Life?

In Luke 10:25, a lawyer asked Jesus, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” One would think Jesus would reply with some New Testament teaching. But instead, Jesus asked the lawyer, “What is written in the Law?” Does the Law of Moses, then, teach us how to have eternal life?
