Magi from the East

The magi (or astrologers or wise men, as they are also known) who came from the east to pay homage to Jesus at his birth are among many examples in the Bible of the unexpected. Why did these men from abroad hold a swaddled Babe in such high esteem while the Babe’s own people, by and large, either barely took notice or held Him in contempt?
