After returning from captivity in Babylon, the people of Israel had finally managed to purge their most egregious sin: the detestable idolatry they had plunged themselves into. Yet they still had problems, primarily a lack of devotion and a failure to take their service to God seriously, all made manifest by a number of moral failures. Malachi, the last prophet of the Old Testament, dealt with Israel's lax attitude with a number of rhetorical questions designed to force Israel to face the fact that God was far from pleased with their tepid service.
