When we read about how Assyria carried the kingdom of Israel into captivity as divine punishment for their unfaithfulness, we think to ourselves, “We could never do something like that!” And yet, when we look at God’s commentary on Israel’s demise, we find that it started with a subtle, yet slippery slope—a slope that we could also find ourselves on.
