Pilgrims and Sojourners

The book of Hebrews calls the heroes of faith of old "strangers and pilgrims on the earth" (Hebrews 11:13), and there is no better example of that pilgrim life than Abraham. What makes Abraham such a noteworthy example, so much so that Paul called him "the father of all those who believe" (Romans 4:11)?
